Thinking about this, maybe MS has a solution: combining VR with project spark - it's game creation platform(with really good demos). Not sure about the business model and hardware , but the abilities of users to travel/play in virtual worlds created with/by friends, and the huge amount of unique content such a platform promises seems really exciting.
